First Phase of Construction on I-96 in Michigan to Run Through End of November

<!CDATA[
Construction is scheduled to run from March 8 until the end of November on I-96 between Wacousta Rd in Clinton County and M-43 (Saginaw Hwy) in Eaton County. This two-year project includes reconstructing 6 miles of pavement, rehabilitatating 10 bridges, and improving the Grand River Ave/I-96 and M-43/I-96 interchanges.

Starting Monday, crews will begin placing traffic control devices along westbound I-96. To facilitate this work, there will be daytime single-lane closures and nighttime multi-lane closures, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., along WB I-96. Once the traffic control devices are in place, all EB traffic will shift to the WB side of the highway using median crossovers. This shift is expected to occur on Tuesday, March 16. EB I-96 will be reconstructed first with work scheduled to last until mid-July. Reconstruction of WB I-96 is expected to run from July through November.

During reconstruction, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on I-96 at all times. Access to all entrance and exit ramps along the corridor will be maintained using temporary crossovers. All road and bridge work on I-96 is expected to be complete by November. Work on M-43, between Marketplace Boulevard and Canal Road, will start in spring 2011.

Illinois Tollway Construction Completion Leads to Reinstatement of Right Lane Truck Requirements

<!CDATA[
Right lane restrictions have been reinstated for trucks using the Illinois Tollway now that systemwide roadway Rebuild and Widen projects have been competed as of the end of December 2009. State law restricts trucks to the two right lanes wherever there are three or more lanes. Black and white signs stating “Trucks Use 2 Right Lanes” are posted at all Tollway entrances where there are three or more roadway lanes. Illinois State Police District 15 enforces the law through regular patrols.

Lane restrictions for trucks are designed to reduce conflict between cars and trucks as well as facilitate traffic flow. Traffic studies have found the restrictions improve traffic flow and reduce accidents caused by improper lane changes. In order to increase safety and traffic flow, the Tollway enforces state law requiring lane restrictions of trucks with three or more axles to the right-most lanes. As a result, lane restrictions for trucks are now designated throughout the 286-mile Tollway System.

Exceptions to the truck lane restrictions may be made during construction to allow trucks to travel safely through work zones and avoid driving on shoulders. Trucks also may use the left lanes to yield to emergency vehicles or when there is an accident or other obstruction that makes it necessary to move out of the right lanes.

“District 15 rigorously enforces improper lane usage on the Tollway System,” said District 15 Commander John Jesernik. “We encourage truck drivers to stay to the right to avoid accidents and help facilitate an efficient flow of traffic for the benefit of all motorists.”
]]

Gateway Traveler Information System Named ITS Project of the Year for 2009

<!CDATA[
Gateway Traveler Information System Honored as ITS-Midwest 2009 Project of the Year At its 2009 Annual Meeting held in Indianapolis, Indiana; the Intelligent Transportation Society-Midwest Chapter composed of the state societies in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio honored the Gateway Traveler Information System website and related operations as ITS-Midwest Project of the Year.

As regular visitors to the site can attest, the scope of available information has been dramatically increased over the past year as the Gateway expanded staff for 24/7/365 coverage. Besides the addition of Michigan to the coverage area, the Gateway now boasts information from the Mississippi River to the Ohio border in the four state (Illinois-Indiana-Michigan-Wisconsin) coverage area.

The roadwork and incident information are augmented by impacts from special events such as parades, marathons, and other celebrations. The data on area Interstates and limited access highways is supplemented by arterial information. Though congestion and travel times are not available for these arterials, construction and incidents resulting in blockage are displayed to give drivers in the area the most comprehensive picture of traffic conditions and thereby aid them in making truly informed travel choices.
